The CHL is AA profesional hockey the mast majority of the cities are in the southern United States with 2 franchises being in Colorado. The average franchise cost is 2 million per year and around 90 games a year. The USHL is the top junior hockey division has 12 teams that are all in the midwest (4 in IA, 3 in NE) average cost is 1 million per year and on tallent is believed to be better. The USHL plays around 70-75 games per year.
Heres what I know and have found out about Rapid City. It of course has Mount Rushmore just down the road and is home to around 60,000 residents. The CBA Rapid City Thrillers led the CBA in attendence in the early 90's and produced future NBA coaches Flip Saunders and Eric Mussleman. Pat Hall who was majority owner moved the team to Florida because of a better venue deal however the team folded in 2 years. The Rapid City Posse/Thrillers and Gold all played in the Civic Center over the next couple of years but never drew well. Basketball hasn't been in Rapid for atleast 5 years. The R.C. Machine of the IFL came to town in 2000 were prety good later went onto the NIFL and then to the UIF as the Red Dawgs after poor attendence the Red Dawgs lay dormit as they still hold UIF franchise rights. The R.C. Aces came to town with the NIFL and were succesful on the field but an embeseling owner just about cost them the season as Pat Hall, Less Cook, Don McElray, and Scott Martin had to take over the franchise. Lack of funds cost them the 2007 team. Hopefully the Aces will come out of disfunt and play in the UIF next season. The Civic Center Don Barnett Arena holds 8,000ish needs north end courtside seats and could use some general cosmetic work. 4 new Jumbo screens are in each corner of the Arena. The new Civic Center Arena being constructed as we speak will have an ice ring and will hold 5,000 for hockey and 5,700 for basketball and is equipt with skyboxes. Rapid City Civic Center needs tenants and minor league sports are best.
